DIFFERENTIATE DISEASES FROM THE
COLOR
OF
THE URINE
All
of
us
should
note
the color of
the
urine as
a
regular habit. Normally, it is pale
yellow in color, clear and without any
vis-
ible
traces
of
blood
at all.
The normal
amount
passed in one day should
also be
noted;
any deviation, e.9.,
too
much or
too
little,
must also be noted
carefully.
All
healthy
subjects would normally pass around
1,500
cc
of
urine. A "tea-colored" urine signifies
jaundice -
poor liver
function
mostly due to
obstructive elements in
the
liver
or
in
the
bile
duct.
Such
yellow color is
usually best
demonstrated
in
the
white sclera
of
the eyes
but mirror examination in
good
lighting
is
required. Blood stained urine is due
to
kidney
or
urinary
tract stones,
infection
or
even tumor.
lf
unsure
whether
there
is blood or not, a specimen
of
urine
can
be examined under
the
microscope which can detect
any presence
of
red blood cells.
A
milky urine
is
easily recognized -
it
signifies "chyuria" whereby lymph from
lymphatic circulation are leaked
into
the urinary tract.
Pus in
the
urine
would also make
it
whitish
in color;
again, urine microscopy would tell the difference as pus cells can easily be seen
under
the
microscope.
However, not all
discolored
urines signify diseases.
Vitamin
B
is being passed out through
the
urine, espe-
cially when substantial supplements of, e.9.,
vitamin
B
complex are being taken. There are also other medi-
cations that would stain the urine
-
usually the doctor would tell the patient
upon
the prescription of
such
drugs.
