TRADITIONAL
CHINESE
MEDICINE
MANAGEMENT
OF
CHILDHOOD AUTISM
Autism affects
1-2"h
of all children.
Autism
means that
the child
is
too
self-centered
-
in mild cases, the
child does not wish
to
play with
others;
he is not interested in his surroundings. The child
is
seen
to
be "anti-
social". For more severe cases, the child
is
very indifferent
even
to
relatives, attracting criticisms that the
child
is
too
proud
of
himself
-
he
would
have
very
few
friends. The most prominent symptom
of
autism
is
a
defective speech, e.g. belated ability of learning to talk; even after learning to talk, the speech
is
far
from
fluent. lnterests are of
a
very narrow
range;
over a
long
period
of
time,
he
would be interested
in
only
one
kind of play
with
no interest on any others, even
though
all others are taking
turns
in
other
kinds
of
play and
games.
He
also
has considerable
difficulty
in
taking
up
any
new interests introduced
to
him.
The
intellect
is
subdued but mechanical memory may be good, e.9.,
of
dates, numerical digits,
poetry
vocabulary, peoples'
names
and
routes. He may also perform some monotonous actions, e.9., opening and closing
the
door
repeatedly over and over again. There are
no
special medication that helps autism patients but acupuncture
and concoctions may help. Parents must give extra care and concern
-
never distance away from
such
children.
Encourage them to
talk
(even
though you
know
the
answer already). Avoid
exerting any
pressure
on them,
otheruvise
they
may
stad to
wet
their
beds.
