CAN DIABETICS BECOME
PREGNANT?
Although pregnancy seems to
be
the duty
as
well as privilege
of
all
normal women,
for
diabetics,
there are
several
related
problems.
Pregnancy
may
worsen diabetes,
making
the
already-
disrupted normal metabolism
even
worse;complications of
preg-
nancy and
of
the newborn baby
may
well be
increased;the
usually
negligible maternal and neonatal mortality rates may now
be
increased
considerably,
as compared with non-diabetics.
Diabe-
tes
affects
fertility
in
-2h;
abortion rate,
15-30%;
pregnancy-re-
lated
hypertension
rates increase by 13-30%; possibility
of
exces-
sive amniotic
fluid
inside the
womb
increases by 20-30%; risks of
operative
delivery
may
increase;postnatal
bleeding
and
infection
also increase; risks
of
over-sized newborns are increased; risks of
inborn
abnormalities also
increases 4-10 times.
After marriage,
if
diabetes
is
very well controlled and there are no complications,
e.9., affecting the heart,
the
brain
and the kidneys, etc., pregnancy
is permissible.
During
the first 3 months of the antenatal
period,
diabetic control must be meticulous so as to assure normal devel-
opment
of
the infant
and
to minimize rates of inborn abnormalities,
abortions,
pre-mature delivery, antenatal fetal death and over-sized newborns.
Your
doctor would advise
on
reversion
to
insulin
injections;
limit the calorie
intake
to
1800-2000 Kcal
per
day,
with
50% carbohydrates,
20%
protein and 30%
fat;
weight
increase
should
not
exceed
1.5 Kg/month. Take regular exercises.
