NOVEL METHOD
FORTREATINGTUMORS ATTHE
FUNDUS
OFTHE EYEBALL
Liu
Ping is a
fresh
graduate
of
a vocational
college
but has
just
been diagnosed
to
be suffering
from
a
small melanoma
of
the choroid
layer
of
her right
eyeball.
Apart from surgical excision
of
her eyeball,
she
could also travel abroad
to
receive Gamma Knife treatment designed especially for eyeball
tumors
at
a
cost
of
USD 30,000. Dismayed,
she
later
on learned
that a
teaching hospital
of the Tongji
Medical
University
in
Wuhan has successfully implemented the same
noveltechnique
for Gamma Knife application to the eyeball
at
a
much more affordable cost.
The Gamma
Knife
was
invented by
Swedish neurosurgeons
and employs
201
radioactive Cobalt-60 sources
to
irradiate a
very
precise common focal point; its application
to
the
eyeball
requires
further
modification and development on
the
technique. At
first, the Ophthalmologist did
a
minor operation to
fix
her right eyeball;
the Gamma
Knife metal
localizer
lrame was then fixed
firmly to
her
skull
bone,
just
like
the tripod of
a
coordinate measuring instrument
sitting
firmly
on
the
ground. When the
treatment
plan
was
ready,
she
was
put on the treatment couch and placed inside
the
helmet
of
the
Gamma
Knife. Kept absolutely
still, she
actually
fell
asleep.
When followed up
6
months later, she was working
normally and her MRI showed complete disappearance of her original tumor, thanks
to
the
new technology.
