PITFALLS
OF MANAGING HYPERTENSION
There
are
120
million hypertensives in China
and
at
least
1
billion worldwide. However, pitfalls still exist
-
the
message
still has
not
sunk
in deep enough
so
that
complications
like stroke,
coronaries and
kidney
failure are still increasing
-
the
real cause of the top
killer. Apart from
the
hard work
of
medical
professionals, adequate understanding
by lay
persons
is
just as
important. According to
the
latest American
standards, normal pressure is lower
than
120/80
mm
Hg;
with every
rise
of
20110,
risks
of heart and
blood
vessel diseases are
doubled.Take
note
of
your lifestyle.
Developing
countries are
not exempt
from
hyperten-
sive
illness
-
the incidence
rates
are rising
steadily.
For healthy
subjects
55 years old,
the
risks
of
hyper-
tension
is
as high as g0%; above 65, at least
213
have
hypertension.
With
rapidly
aging
populations,
hypertensives would increase
rapidly.
Neither
are
those engaged in physical labors exempt
from
hyper-
tension
-
Chinese rural dwellers
have
just as high
rates
-
probably
due
to
lack
of knowledge on
prevention;
lower socio-economic status
may
also contribute to
the
higher complication and mortality rates than city
dwellers.
ln
1991
, 36.3"/"
of city dwellers
knew about
their
hypertension; only
1
3.7"h
of
rural
dwells
knew.
Only
17.4o/"
of hypertensives
in
cities
receive
treatment;
in rural
areas,
only 5.4"/"
do.
The
worst
is, <3"h of
hypertensives are well controlled, let
alone
understanding
the
requirement for persistent control.
