THE TITANIC
AND
CLAUSTROPHOBIA
A
man
in
his 30s
was
once
trapped
inside
a Shanghai
hotel lift all
alone.
lt
was complete darkness and
he panicked and banged
at
the
lift
door
so desperately
as
if
it
was doom's
day.
When rescued, he had already fainted.
From
then on, he had refused to go into
any lift at all;
he was
also
extremely
claustrophobic
-
he
would
have unex-
plained fear and a fainting or nausea
sensation in
any
closed environment,
especially in congested train cabins
or
cars.
On
further clinical probing,
he
recalled that, when
he
was a
kid,
whilst
playing
with
his
friends
in
the field,
he
was
trapped
inside a
small thatched hut
when
he
decided to hide
away
from his
lriends
but
the farmer had unknowingly
locked
up
the hut, leaving him all alone
inside the hut without food for half-a-
day.
When his folks finally
lound
him
inside the hut, he had already fainted
from
hunger. As
these 2 terrible
expe-
riences had added up together,
he
required "desensitization"
therapy.
The
therapist
watched the VCD "Titanic"
together with
him. On
viewing
the
scene
of Jack
struggling desperately
inside
the
water-trapped
bridge,
he was very
uneasy
but
gradually
improved with
repeated watching, each
time
pre-
medicated, at
first with
active drugs,
later on, substituted by "look-alike"
placebos.
As he no longer
panicked
even with the placebo, the therapy was
successful and
he
was
happy
to
be
a
normal individual again.
