THE DEFINITIVE ROLE
OF
TRADITIONAL
CHINESE
MEDICINE
ANDTAIJI
ON
PREVENTION
AND
TREATMENT
OF SARS
The
author
is a
very
well
respected
and
one of
the
most experi-
enced traditional Chinese
medicine
(TCM) physician of Beijing. As
SARS
may
come
back now, he
is
adamant that
TCM physicians
must
take
a
substan-
tially
greater
role
in
the
control
of
SARS.
He
tirmly
believes
that there
was
no
properly organized TCM physician par-
ticipation
during
the last
SARS epidemic
in Beijing. On the contrary, Guangzhou
was much more organized. This would
explain why
the
mortality rate
from
SARS was much higher in Beijing than
in
Guangzhou.Vice-Premier and Health
Minister
Wu
Yi, also acting as
com-
mander-in-chief of China's
SARS pre-
vention
and
control headquarters
also
highlighted the
role of
TCM for
SARS
and called
for
further
recognition of the
scientific value during
a
symposium at-
tended by renowned traditional
medi-
cine
experts
in Beijing on
8
May 2003,
Wu urged the active application
of
TCM
resources to the anti-SARS
fight.
Thus,
Western
and
TCM physicians should
collaborate
closely. Moreover,
as
TCM
emphasized on "pre-clinical" disease
management,
the
role
of
TCM on
pre-
vention of SARS
is
substantial. Apart
from the usual tonic and nutritious food
and drink, regular
life
style, etc,
the
author believes
that taiji
should
be
introduced
as
a
preventive exercise
to
be implemented country wide.
