THE
STRATEGY
AGAINST
MICRO.ORGANISMS
-
UNCHANGINGVS RAPID
CHANGE
Micro-organisms
are
closely
related
to
human
beings. Like
us,
micro-organisms
are also
rapidly
changing all the time, e.9.,
the
recently
discovered horrible corona
virus
is
a
mutation originating from wild animals.
ln the past, infectious diseases
had
been the number
1
killer,
e.9., measles,
plague and cholera.
With
the availabil-
ity of vaccination, antibiotics and better
environmental hygiene, these
are
better
controlled.
Measles has already
been eradicated from the earth
and
polio
is
also
on
the way
out.
Unfortunately,
there
are more new types of infections
than the number we
have
eradicated,
e.9.,
AIDS, legionnaire's disease, hepa-
titis C,
E,
0139 cholera, Lyme disease
and new
kinds
of
flu,
etc.The other main
worry
is
that diseases like tuberculosis
is
coming
back because
of
resistant
strains,
let
alone the discovery of stom-
ach ulcer
being
also due to H
pylori
bacteria. ln the 80's, infected water
supply
had
caused
an
outbreak
of
hepa-
titis
E
in
China,
10,000 people were
affected. Even Shanghai had
a
huge
outbreak of hepatitis A affecting nearly
300,000 people, due to consumption of
half-cooked blood clams. Even
in
America,
a
well-known ice
cream
factory was
infected by
Listeria
bacte-
ria
and
a few
thousand people through-
out the world were
affected.
Thus, the
basic principles
of
hygiene and boiling
drinking water would still go a long way
against changing micro-organisms.
