Apart from
a
balanced
diet,
taking
enough
water is,
in
fact,
even
more
important.
Normally,
at
least
2,000 ml of water intake per day
is
required (including 6-700
ml
of water
from the food)
to
offset
the
output of
1-1,500
ml
through the urine,
1-200,
the
feces,
6-700, the
sweat, and 300
ml,
the
lungs. From these figures, water drink-
ing
is
obviously important.
ln
UK,
a
study
on
253 cities
and towns found
"hard water" to offer
a
'10-15% reduc-
tion
on
death
rates
from
cardio-vascu-
lar
diseases. Another American study
on 4,200 adult subjects also seemed
to show favourable etfects
of
drinking
hard water.
Apart from
heart diseases,
high blood viscosity
may
also predis-
pose
to
thrombosis
or clot
formation
inside veins, e.9., "deep vein thrombo-
sis" of the calf. During mid-night, in the
small
hours of dawn,
the incidence rates
of coronaries and stroke tend
to
be
higher, possibly due to the higher blood
viscosity during
those
hours.
Drink
enough water during long
haul
flights
to avoid deep
vein
thrombosis; exercise
the
limbs regularly; drink a glass
of
water
before
going to
sleep.
Thus, the
glass of water
may save
your
life!
However,
after strenuous
exercises,
despite the
profuse
sweating and
pro-
found thirst, avoid immediate drinking
of
excessive water as
the
peripheral
circulation
is
still dilated. Overloading
with
water
may overexert
the
heart.
