ANESTHETIC INJECTION
TOOKTHE
LIFE
OF
A
KID
One
day,
whilst playing
high
jump,
Zhou Jian,
9
years old, fell and hurt his
right
collar
bone with very severe pain.
Fortunately,
the
Chief
Orthopedic
Sur-
geon Dr Feng reassured him and
his
parents
that
there was no threat
to
his
life at all. Moreover,
the fractured
right
collar
bone could easily
be
fixed under
a
local
anesthetic, obviating a
general
anesthesia. Dr
Feng
went on
to
reas-
sure them that the local anesthetic was
the safest available
as
well as effective.
As
a
routine,
the
Hospital
Statf
had al-
ready ascertained
that
there
was
no
history of allergy or sensitivity
to
any
medication nor food at all. Both parties
signed
an
consent form
for
surgery that
indicated possibility ol an allergic reac-
tion to
the
local
anesthetic and misalign-
ment
of
the fracture. Again, the parents
got
very worried but Dr Feng explained
that the chances were extremely
slim
for those
to
happen.
When
all was
set,
the
local
anesthetic
"Lidocaine"
was
being injected
but,
Jian died of acute
shock
just 2 minutes later despite
ac-
tive resuscitation with venous injections
of
steroid and other medications
as
well
as
performing
a
tracheostomy
(cutting
open
the
wind-pipe
to
facilitate
resuscitation). ln fact, Lidocaine
does
have an
excellent
safety
record
but,
in
medical practice, there
is no
such thing
as
"1007o
safe".
