interviewed
in Guangzhou
on
15
April.
He
said
a
strict and
professional
criteria is
adopted
for
documenting
SARS cases.
ln
February, Guangdong
had an intentional system
for
monit
oring
and
reporting SARS cases for
all
hospitals
and
clinics.
He stressed
that
all
cases submitted
to
him
will
be
reported.
Around
10
January, the
CDCP
had
sent
a
team
to
Zhongshan
City
to
investigate
the 'lst
few cases. Symp-
toms
are
high
and
persistent fever
(usually
above
38"C),
muscle ache,
generalized
malaise
and
respiratory
distress. The
white
blood
cells
are
normal or
low.
On chest
x-ray,
diffuse
opacities occur
early.
The
virus
spread
by droplets
at
close distances, rather
than through
the
air.
The
middle age
population and medical
&
nursing
workers are often affected; death
rate
is
-4y",
usually confined to advanced
or complicated
cases.
Facial masks,
hand washing, personal and environ-
mental hygiene are highly
relevant.
Despite the
lack
of specific data for this
new
entity, a
great effort
is
made to iso-
late the
source ol infection
-
the
patients
and their contacts, usually
for
7-10
days. Specific
medical
treatments, rapid
diagnostic tests and, above all,
the
vaccine
for
population
prevention
require much hard work
