As severe atypical
respiratory
syndrome (SARS)
is
very infective, the
utmost
care
must
be
exercised.
Although the detail route of spread
of
the
SARS
virus
is still
not
well
documented, we can tackle it like most
other infections,
by
controlling
the
source,
the
route
of
spread and
to
protect
the
people
against
infection.
ln
fact, the
less
we
know,
the
more
careful we should
be.
The
primary
infection
of
SABS
is
probably
a
new
strain of the
coronavirus
but
other
secondary infections may
well
set
in
afterwards.
Patients
are isolated
strictly;
contacts
are also
quarantined
and
observed;
maintain clean
tap
water;
avoid
food and drink
contamjnation;
ensure safe sewage disposal;
clean
the
environment
thoroughly.
Active
immu-
nity
is specific immunity
developed
against a particular micro-organrsm
as
a
result
of
infection
or
vaccination.
Active
immunity
are either of
the
humoral type, a more prolonged
type
of
protection acting through
the
blood;
or the cellular type, acting
promptly
through
the
"natural killer cells"
for
example. Passive immunity
is
delivered
by injection of globulins.
The coronavirus
of
SARS
is
a
new strain
that
has
mutated through
cross-infection
between animals and
man.
Above
all,
avoid contact with the infective source;
keep an optimistic outlook; never panic
or worry
too
much; ensure strict
personal
and
household hygiene; take
moderate exercises; take
a
balanced
diet; avoid catching colds and
refrain
from smoking.
