PARATHYROIDS SETTLING
ON
THE SHOULDER
Eighteen years ago, the author
witnessed
a
1O-year-old
girl who
had

thyroid gland
removed
surgically.
Unfortunately, together with
the thyroid gland, her parathyroids also
went.
Apart from
extra
Vitamin
D
tablets,
she
must
also
receive
venous inlections
of calcium each week, otherwise she
would have intractable cramps due to
low calcium
in

blood
- a
result of
her loss
of
her parathyroids. The au-
thor and others decided to relieved her
suffering by
transplanting
parathyroids

baby who died

birth.

mother, first

parathyroids were trans-
planted underneath

her shoulders. She became a
normal person after the transplant

the
calcium
level
was
normalized
and
she
had no
more
cramps. At present, she
is
already
a
grown
up
woman and work-
ing
just
like
any
other person.
lt
is
re-
markable that there was no rejection of
the transplanted parathyroids
-
this
is
because rejection seldom
occurs
against newborn organs. As newborn
deaths may occur
from
time to time,
those who have
similar
problems
should take the chance so
as
to reduce
unnecessary suffering.
