IS FEVER BENEFICIAL
OR
HARMFUL?
The normal
body
temPerature
is
37oC.
The maintenance
of
a
relatively
constant temperature ensures optimum
body metabolism.
Fever relers to
tem-
peratures
that are significantly
higher.
Fevers
are
designed
to
counteract
certain
unusual
conditions, e.9.,
en-
hancing
the
defense
to
infections or
allergy. Such fevers are
therefore
beneficial. On
the
other hand, patients
with, e.9., thyroid crisis also have fever
but
these are
not
beneficial.
ln any
case,
any fever
that tailed
to
be
managed
promptly, even
the
so-called beneficial
levers
that
have gone on for
too
long
may eventually be harmful to
the
body,
as body
metabolism
has
already
been
adversely atfected by the abnormally
high
temperature.
The centre in
the
body
for controlling
body
temperature
is
in
the hypothalamus
of
the
brain.
The
body temperature may
be
raised
through
the
mechanism
of
"endog-
enous
pyrogens".
The skin capillaries
are
constricted
for
maximal
heat
preservation;the
skin
feels cold
and
the
patient
may
have "chills", shivering or
"rigors". Soon
after that,
fever
is
apparent. When
the
body
temperature
is
too
high,
the
reverse
happens
-
the
skin feels warm and are pinkish,
as
the
capillaries dilate to dispense excessive
heat; sweat glands secret sweat, the
evaporation of which absorbs consid-
erable heat.
ln
infants and
young
children, fever should
be
managed
much
more
promptly,
as
convulsion
may result from fevers, probably
be-
cause
their
brains are less mature.
