TUBERCULOSIS STRIKES
AGAIN
ln China,
there are
now
6
million
tuberculosis
patients,
of which
1.5
million are still infective and the annual
deaths reach 0.5 million. Unfortunately,
2/3
of
the patients are between
15-45
years
old,
so
that the
labour
torce
is
definitely
attected.
Across the world,
up
to
1/3 of
the population are infected.
ln
1995, the
3
million deaths reached a
peak since '1850. Since the
invention
of
eflective antibiotics
like
streptomycin,
cure
rates had
reached>90%.
Unfortunately,
out of the
2
billion
patients world wide, 50 million
have
resistant bacteria
-
the
mortality rate
is
much
higher. The
rate
of
resistant
strains can be as high as 50%, even
in
China,
the
current
rate
is
41%, amongst
the highest
in
the
world.
With
the
current trend
of
increase of
AIDS
patients,
more
will
be intected
by
tuberculosis as tuberculosis
usually
affects
those with
low
body
resistance
and AIDS patients
are the
best
candidates.
Treatment of the double
pathology
is
particularly complicated
and sites affected
in
the body are
not
just the lungs
- it
can be anywhere, the
course of tuberculosis is also
much
more
rapid.
ln Asia,
many AIDS
patients die from tuberculosis.
