CHATTERS ON REASONABLE
NUTRITION
Nutrition is essential
for
normal
metabolism, tissue
repair
and
growth.
Food may
be
differentiated
into
these
6
categories: carbohydrates,
fat,
proteins, vitamins, minerals and water.
The body tissues are mainly made of
protein, fat, water and minerals. Energy
is
provided mainly by carbohydrates
and fat. Minerals and vitamins are
re-
sponsible
for
regulating physiological
functions. As proteins are so important
for body
building
and
as
the
basal
meta-
bolic rates
of
the young are higher than
adults, ensure enough protein
intake
for
the
young. Calcium
is
essential
for
bone
and
teeth
-
most important
for the
grow-
ing
child.
Whenever
feasible,
breast
feed your child. As for adults,
the
main
requirements are those of tissue repair
and
metabolism. Take a well-balanced
diet; avoid over-eating. ln old
people,
the
basal metabolic rate is lower,
func-
tions are degenerating, the immunity is
sub-optimal and even activities are low.
Reduce
the food
intake accordingly.
Mal-nutrition leads to
tiredness,
loss
of
weight, generalized swelling, anaemia,
low
blood pressure,
poor
appetite
and
prone
to
infection etc.
Cook
all
food
thoroughly
but refrain
from
keeping
for
excessive periods after cooking. Milk
should
be
pasteurized.
Keep the
kitchen
clean and wash hands before prepar-
ing food.
