THE REVOLUTIONARY
APPLICATION OF
CORD
BLOOD FORTHE APLASTIC
BONE
MARROW
An
Australian
cord
blood trans-
plant saved
the
life ol
Yan
Yan in Hong
Kong.
Cord
blood
that
comes from the
umbilical cord and
the
placenta,
has
now been
found to
be
a
rich source
of
stem cells
that can
replace the stem
cells
of
the
bone marrow
for
manufac-
turing
blood
cells.
ln aplastic ahaemia,
the bone
marrow
stops
manufacturing
red blood
cells.
ln
the
past,
the
classi-
cal way
of
treatment
was
repeated
blood
transfusions. Of course,
bone
marrow
transplantation could
be done
but donors were scarce,
the
HLA
matching,
too critical
and
the
cost, too
high.
Cord
blood
transplant was
revo-
lutionary
-
it
was
rich in stem
cells
and
haemopoetic factors (that stimulate
blood cell proliferation); easy to harvest
and
to
keep.
The
best
was that the HLA
matching was much less
critical.
After
the
first
successful
case
in
1
989, thou-
sands
of
cases have been
done.
Moreover, even cases of leukaemia
or
"blood cancer" would benefit -
by
wip-
ing out the abnormal cells,
the
marrow
was
left
with no cells
but
the same pro-
cess
of
cord
blood
transplant could then
be done,
lust
like for aplastic anaemia.
By now, a lot of cord blood banks have
already been set up in many countries.
