A
PIONEER
OF
GENETIC
STUDIES
IN
CHINESE
MEDICINE
Chinese Medicine had been regarded
as
unscientific and not advanced.
Prof.
Wang
lrom Chengdu University
ot
Chinese
Medicine has proven
it
otherwise. Genetic
studies
is
taken
as an
example.
ln the west,
scientists
like G.T. Mendel and T.H. Mor-
gan started the study
ol
genes in the 19th
and
the 20th century, and the
21
st
century
has become the century
ol
biological sci-
ence and genetics.
Prof. Wang thinks
that
it
is
necessary
to develop genetic
studies
in
Chinese
Medi-
cine
and bridge
it
with
western medicine.
ln
doing so, both areas would have
mutual
influence. The history of genetic
studies
started
as early
as
the
oracle bones
in
China. There were
over 3,000
records of
pregnancy and
birth
and in
the
ancient
books.
There were over 8000 cases
of
de-
lormed letus. Ancient records show 300 to
400 cases
ol
congenital diseases and 200
chapters describing pregnancy and
heredF
tary factors.
Prof.
Wang intends to promote stud-
ies on congenital and after birth influential
factors, theories of kidney
yin
(deficiency)
and kidney
yang
(exceeding energy), the
condition of
the
internal organs and one's
behavior, etc.,
so
that
Western
and Chinese
Medicine
can
integrate together
to
do re-
search on genetics.
Based
on the
theories ot "Fear
Dam-
ages
the
Kidney" and
"the
Kidney
is
con-
nected
to
the Brains" in Chinese Medicine,
some pioneer research has been
canied out
using rats for experiments. Pregnant
mother
rats
were scared severely by
a cat
eating a
rat
outside the mother
rat's
cage.
When
the
baby rats were born,
their
brains and kid-
neys were dissected. Both the brain's and
the kidney's cells
showed
abnormality. lt
was a
clear
indication of
the mother
rat's
induced
lear
had influenced the cell devel-
opment
ofthe
baby
rats'brains
and kidneys.
