WHY ANTIBIOTICS
FOR
STOMACH DISORDERS?
For
many
years, stomach disor-
ders (commonly
gastritis,
ulcers)
are
treated by antacids,
mucosal
protec-
tion
agents and muscle cramp relax-
ation agents.
ln
1983, scientists
have
found a bacteria (Helicobacter pylori
or
H
pylori)
in
the stomach mucosa.
ln
most
developing countries,
the
infection
rate
of
the population is around
70%.
Later on,
it
was confirmed
that
H
pylori
was directly responsible for peptic
ul-
ceration and eventually,
stomach
cancer. ln fact, around half of all stom-
ach cancer patients have been found
to have
H
pylori infection. Only antibiot-
ics can
get
rid of
these bacteria.
Con-
sult your doctor for
the
appropriate
course of antibiotics. ln any case,
all
patients with stomach or duodenal
ul-
ceration or gastritis should have antibi-
otics to get
rid
of
the
H
pylori. This
is
to
ensure
that
the stomach
ulceration
would not return. However,
lor
those
without any lesions
in
the stomach,
it
may not be necessary
to
treat
the
H
pylori.
As
H pylori is also
found
in den-
tal
caries, the use of chop-sticks
to
share
food
may spread
the
bacteria
more
readily. Brush
teeth
diligently,
especially before going to bed.
