INTERESTING PERSPECTIVES
OFTHE
EUNUCH
AND MALE
HORMONE
The male hormone is highly
ac-
tive physiologically and is
responsible
for the
"secondary
sexual characters",
e.9., growth
of
the beard, distribution
of
the male body hair pattern, muscular
development, prominence
of
the
'Adam's apple", deepening
of the
voice,
etc.
The hormone
is
very closely related
to sexual activities
of
the
male. Sexual
urge is normal but must be released
in
a
moral and socially acceptable
way,
otheMise
it
would
be
catastrophic.
ln
fact,
in
female, male hormone is
also
produced
in
the adrenal glands and
is
also
responsible for
sexual
urge. Defi-
ciency of
the
male
hormone
leads
even-
tually
to
osteoporosis (loss
ol
bone
substance);
in
young people, there
is
delay
of
the closure
of
the epiphysis so
that the long
bones would grow
to
a
greater length. Not only the gestures
would be
more
feminine, but also the
psychology
and
personality are also
affected. Eunuchs
used
to
provide
an
unique opportunity
for
studying
the
ef-
fects of male hormone
loss
-
even their
personality
have
subtle
but
significant
changes, e.9.,
normally
they
are emo-
tionally labile and timid, narrow-minded
but can
easily
be
provoked.
Fortunately,
all of
these are
now history.
