PROTEIN INTAKE
Protein
is
essential for
body
func-
tion, growth or
repair.
The production
of
antibodies, interferon,
the
white blood
cells
and lymphocytes
are all
dependent
on protein, without
which
resistance
is
low. However, in
the
modern and well-
developed society, we have to
be
care-
ful
not to take
too
much protein, espe-
cially
when
we suffer
from certain
dis-
eases.
Those with
nephritis of
the
kid-
neys with
a
poor kidney function should
avoid excessive protein, otherwise
uraemia
or kidney
failure
is
aggravated.
Those with poor
liver
function
must
also
avoid excessive protein intake other-
wise liver function
is
affected.
Exces-
sive protein
is
also stored
in
the liver as
fat. When we take
too
much meat, es-
pecially red meat (which has
much
fat),
our chances
of
having cancer is
in-
creased.
For normal
subjects, about 50-
60 grams of protein a day
is
enough.
Custard powder is not a good source
of protein because of processing.
Take
natural
protein
and a
balanced diet.
Eggs are a good source of
'tirst-class"
protein that contains all the essential
amino acids
