Receptors
in
the body
are
special
proteins that can recognize and receive
messages,
e.9.,
hormones,
genes,
metabolic
products, drugs,
toxins
or
even light.
The
number or density of
these
receptors can
vary according to
changes
in
the body environment. This
may
explain some
of
these
unpredict-
able changes in
the
patient's condition
when treatment
is
delivered.
Many
diseases are
believed
to
be related
to
receptor disorders,
e.9.,
obesity,
diabetes
and
Parkinsonism.
Asthma
is
due to spasm of smooth muscles
in
the
small bronchi controlled
by
4 kinds of
receptors. Although
the
mechanism
of
cancer formation
is
complex, cancer
is
caused
by the
stimulation
of
oncogenes
or
suppression
of
proto-oncogenes so
that the study of receptors
may
assist
the prediction
of
treatment success and
prognosis. As
the
receptors
are
made
lrom
protein,
it
may induce
the
body
defense system against them,
e.9.,
myasthenia gravis. Using new research
techniques
that
is continually
being
renewed, even greater success can be
anticipated.
