.'DANCE''
OF
THE
SILVER
NEEDLE
Acupuncture
has
a
history
of
5,000 years; during the
last 20
years,
the practice
is
also implemented widely
in
countries
like USA. lnitially, needles
were
made
from stone or
bamboo
belore metal ones were available. Most
recently, there
is a
trend to explore the
use of
micro-elechicity elechodes, mag-
netism and even laser beams.
The
laser
beams employed
are
of
low
energy
and
have
a effect at
specific
points
of
the body
to
produce remote
biological effects. Compared with metal
needles, laser beams are painless, free
from
any infection, safe, easily control-
lable and
have
wider application
-
application is possible even in those
with skin diseases. With the progres-
sive development
of
these alternative
methods,
it
would
be highly feasible
to
study and attempt to solve the mystery
of
the "acupoint" - it may
be a
system
of
"functional
mode"
that
is entirely
independent of currently documented
ones. As patients are likely to accept
laser
beams better
than the
metal
needles,
in
future, laser beams may be
the dominant method for acupuncture.
