HUMAN POTENTIAL
MECHANISMS
FOR ACUTE
STRESS
Human mechanisms in
reaction
to acute stress always exploit the full
potential
of the
body.
The
muscles
suddenly strengthen markedly
and even
very
heavy
objects can
be lifted. Even
the mental power
is
enhanced markedly
-
normally,
we use only
1/ro
of
our
mental capacity. All
such
reactions are
for
the
best protection
of the
body.
Suitably exploited,
it
makes
a
"champion" out of
work and
especially
sports. On the
other hand, excessive
re-
action
may be harmful to
the
human
body,
e.9., if the
blood pressure
is
elevated
excessively. Avoid
telling the
poor
prognosis
to a
psychologically
unprepared
patient.
ln the work place,
after injury
or
traffic
accidents,
the
workers should be comforted appropri-
ately and not reproached. Use psycho-
therapy whenever feasible.
For
those
elderly
or
those
with
history of heart
or
brain blood vessel diseases,
avoid
sud-
den and
intense
fluctuations
of mood.
Even
thriller dramas, highly excitable
televisions, movies, videos, theatre
plays or sports should also
be
avoided.
