THE
NEW
CONCEPT
OF
AUTO.TRANSFUSION
With
in increasing cases of blood
transfusion-induced infections,
e.g.
hepatitis, the words "blood transfusion"
may now be associated with shades
ol
horror.
For
a healthy individual, the loss
of
less
than
207"
ol lhe
blood
volume
can
readily
be
corrected
by
the body
within
a
short
time.
Auto{ransfusion
is
designed to
avoid
the receipt
of
other
subject's
blood so
that there
is no
risk
of
contracting infection. One method
that can
be used
is
to
store
one's own
blood
in the blood
bank and
then
to
transfuse
at
or after the operation. A
better
method
is
the
so-called
normovolaemic haemodilution method
which
is
also sale and
not
too compli-
cated.
Blood
is
collected from
the
subject concerned
and
stored
at room
temperature. During the operation, the
blood volume
is
restored to satisfactory
levels by isotonic fluids;
when the
operation
is almost
through, the
blood
collected
is auto-transfused. Thus, the
blood loss
is really
that
of
diluted
blood;
the diluted
blood
also permeates tissue
better.
Consult
your
doctor-in-charge for
such prospects.
