UNVEILING
THE SECRETS
OF
AGEING
-
TELOMERE THEORY
ln addition to
the
role in ageing
played
by
free
radicals, the telomere
theory
of
ageing cells
is
receiving much
attention
by scientists.
Whenever
somatic (body)
cells
divide,
the
DNA
inside
the nucleus would copy
itself
and
the
telomere would
be
shortened a
bit
up
to a certain
length when
the
cell
would stop dividing and dies. The length
of the telomere is
also
related to the
activity of telomase, an enzyme
that
is
very
active in reproductive and
cancer
cells. ln
somatic cells,
the
activity of
telomase decreases with
age.
Preser-
vation of the enzyme's activity would
bring
longevity: avoid prolonged and
excessive
whole-body
ionising
inadia-
tion, avoid aflatoxin in mouldy food and
toxic
industrial waste. Take
a
well-
balanced
diet
but avoid over-eating.
Adequate vitamins A, C &
E help to
inhibit
lree
radicals that would damage
telomase. Above
all,
trace elements
like
selenium,
copper,
zinc are
the
ingredients
of
superoxide dismutase
-
an important enzyme
for
clearing free
radicals
in
the
body. All
these should be
taken as
directed
by
the doctor.
