THE DIABETIC
FOOT
CAN
BE
SAVED
.
AN
INTERVIEW WITH
PROFESSOR XI
Professsor
Xi, the Chief of
the
Shanghai Vascular Diseases Research
lnstitute, has 40 years of clinical and
research experience on using
com-
bined Western and Chinese traditional
medicine for vascular
diseases.
ln
1987,
he
first
put
forward his own
ob-
servation and
a
new concept for the
causation
of the
diabetic
foot.
He
pointed
out
that diabetic foot
lacked
the
usual features of arterial blockage
so
typical of other diseases causing foot
necrosis.
With
this
new basis in mind,
he developed
a
method
of
using not
only
topical
herbal application but also
oral
herbal preparations to achieve
a
very
low rate of ampuation for
the
dia-
betic
foot.
He has, up
to
now,
treated
more than 120,000 cases and
the
over-
all response
rate
was
95%.
His
work
is
well
recognized by
the
Ministry
of
Health of the
Country.
ln
1996, Pro-
fessor Leung ol the Chinese University
of
Hong Kong had
also
adopted the
combined
method for the
treatment of

cases
of diabetic
foot
so that
patients
did not require
amputation.
This
has
reinforced Professor
Leung's
faith
in
the
combined therapy for diabetic
foot.
At
present,
he is invited to come
to
Hong
Kong
to collaborate with the Chinese
University and
to
have
joint consulta-
tions for atherosclerosis, tophi arthritis,
diabetes etc.
