CEREBROVASCULAR
DISORDERS
IN
DIABETES MELLITUS
Diabetes is associated
with
an
increase
in
atherosclerotic and
hemo-
dynamic changes
in
vessel walls
and
blood circulation. These alterations
in
blood vessel and its circulation
in
the
brain may cause small inlarction
in
ves-
sel walls, and then interfere with devel-
opment
of
collateral circulation, and pro-
mote atherogenesis.
An
ischemic type
of
stroke occurs more commonly
in
this
group of patients than
the
hemorrhage
in
the brain.
Meanwhile, there is an in-
creased tendency toward
cereral
throm-
bosis and infarction
in
patients with dia-
betes mellitus. The incidence has been
estimated
aout
18%,
and
evidences
from China show that
this
tendency and
the
death rate for cerebrovascular dis-
eases
in
diabetics
in
China
is
similar
to
that
in
Japan,
but
much
higher
than
in
European countries and
the
United
States of America.
lt
has also
been
shown that the numer
of
senior diabetic
patients
is
steadily increasing,
and
more
cases with cerebrovascular disorders
as
one
of the
diabetic
complications
have been simultaneously observed
in
these
senior diabeteic patients.
