THE
HEART'OBESITY'
-
MAY
OCCUR
IN
A FAMILIAL
FORM
ln some
of
the
patients with
hyper-
trophy cardiomyopathy
(an enlarge-
ment
of
the heart can be observed
in
the condition), the disease
may
occur
in
familial
lorm
in about one-third of
to-
tal cases, and
is
considered
as a
con-
genital disease. The condition was first
reported
in
1958
that the
disease
showed an inheritable dispostion. ln his
report
he
found that all his eight young
patients
with
sudden
death
had asym-
metric ventricular hypertrophy in au-
topsy. Subsequently,
he
found that a
brother of one
of
the
above
patients
died
due to the same type of sudden death.
ln
1
961
,
another case report described
that 20 patients from
a
family with
a
to-
lal
ot
77
family
members were diag-
nosed with this heart disease,
and
the
other
11
family
members
were
sus-
pected
to
sutfer from the same disease.
ln
197'l
,
a
case
report further decribed
thst
47
family members from
11
fami-
lies with
a
total of 98 members had the
same type of heart disease. The
inci-
dence
of the
disease has
been
continuously increasing since
the
echocardiography technique was intro-
duced into the cardiology clinic. The
technique
can be used as a screening
procedure for
families at high risks.
ln
the
United States of Amercia,
a
survey
was conducted among the family mem-
bers
of 70
patients
with
hypertrophy
cardiomyopthy,
and
found
that
the heart
of
2
or more family members among 39
patients' family investigated were suf-
fering from the
disease.
lt has been
con-
sidered that
the
disease displays
a
sim-
ple Mendelian pedigree
pattern of au-
tosomal dominant inheritance, because
about
half of the
family
members
from
the
manilest the same disease
without
gender difference, and the disease
is
inherited one generation by another.
However,
the precise loci
of
the
gene
involved are still uncertain.
