ABOUT DIABETES MELLITUS
Diabetes
mellitus
is a disease
ol
worldwide distribution, and the number
of these patients continues to increase
in the present time.
The
reasons are
considered
to
be
:
1)
the
population
grows and
becomes
older, the life
ex-
pectancy
of the treated diabetic
is
steadily
increasing;
2) since
more dia-
betics live long
enough to
have
children,
an increasing number
of
children will
in-
herit
the
diabetic
gene and
3) obesity,
which appears to precipitate diabetes
among
those
predisposed
to
it,
is
also
on
the
rise
due to dietary changes,e.g.,
excessive energy,
fat
and sugar
in-
takes, etc., this allows more potential
diabetics to emerge.
Diabetes
had been
recognized
(500
B. C.)
from ancient Chinese medi-
cal
writings such
as
"Huang-di
Nei
Jing"
(a
summarized
book
for
internal medi-
cine) which mentioned a syndrome of
polyphagia, polydipsla, and polyuria.
However,Thomas Willis,
a
British phy-
sician
in
the
Seventeenth Century, de-
scribed the sweetness
of
the diabetic
urine,
"as
if
imbused
with
honey"
(mellitus), which was latter
proved
to be
sugar, and then the disease was first
named as "diabetes mellitus".
Diabetes
is
consisted
of
a
meta-
bolic and vascular component, which
are probably intenlated.
The
metabolic
syndrome
is
characterized
by
an
inapproriate elevation of blood glucose
level, associated with alterations
in
lipid
and protein
metabolism,
for which
a
relative or absolute lack of insulin
is re-
sponsible.
The diabetic
is
faced
not only
with
a
decrease
in life
expectancy
but also
with the overpresent possibility of disa-
bling complications. Nevertheless,
some of the patients do very well for
many decades. Knowledge about clini-
cal manilestation, diagnosis, treatment
and prevention for diabetes, which
is
important to the lay populations, physi-
cians and the public service group, has
been presented in
the
paper.
