TREATABLE?
The
neoplastic process may pro-
duce
secondary
host etfects which of-
ten present the primary challenge
to
the
physician including the psychological
eflects of cancer to the patient. Obvi-
ously, realizing
by
the patient
that
he
has an
incurable malignant disease has
prolound
psychological
and
socioeco-
nomic impact on him, particulatly
if
the
disease
strikes him
in
youth or
middle
age. Thus, an important aspect of can-
cer therapy
is
the hope of improvement
that
it offers the patient.
As
recorded
by
the
Royal Medical College
ol
Lon-
don in England, the cancer patient with
the
hope
of
improvement had a sub-
stantially
longer
ten-year survival
rate
(70%) than
that
(20%) for those with
less or
no
hope of improvement. As the
disease progresses,
the
patient may
pass through a
variety
of mental proc-
esses, including rejection, hostility, de-
spair,
and
finally acceptance
of
the
in-
evitable.
Feelings of
deprivation
are
a
major component of
the
psychological
impact
of
this disease. The physician
should
provide hope, encouragement,
understanding, sympathy, and support.
The patient
with
diagnosed cancer
should have the confidence of
comba!
ing his malignant disease and
related
side effect due to cancer theraples.
