BODY REGULATING ABILITY
TO ENVIRONMENTAL
TEMPERATURE
ln health, the body temperature
of man is maintained within a narrow
range despite extremes
in
environmen-
tal
conditions and physical activity.
When there
is
a
strong stimulus
for
heat
production, muscle activity may
in-
crease
to
the
point of
shivering,
or
even
to generalized rigor; and when
there
is
a
need
for
conservation
of
heat,
adrenergic autonomic stimuli cause a
sharp reduction
in
the blood flow to the
surface.
lt
is now known that the
con-
trol of body
temperature, integrating the
various
physical and
chemical
proc-
esses for heat production or loss,
is a
function
of
cerebral centers located
in
the hypothalamus.
According
to
the
function
of
hypothalamus
involved
in
the
integration of
temperatu
re-regulating
responses,
the
hypothalamus,
in
a
sense, can
be
considered
as
the "air-
conditioner" of man.
