Slight
to moderate enlargement of
the
liver
due
to
diffuse infiltration of liver
cells
by neutral
fat
(triglyceride) has
been
a
common clinical and pathologic
finding since gray-scale
ultra-sound
scanning
technique became
popularly
employed.
Although minimal fatty
changes of
the
liver are often
transient
and have
no
clinical significance,
per-
sistent or extensive
fatty
infiltration
(more than 5-10%
of
weight
of
the liver)
may produce dysfunction and symp-
toms that require careful evaluation and
treatment.
An etiological classification,
major
clinical
manifestations and
gen-
eral measures for treatment are briefly
discussed
in
the
paper.
Attention to
nutritional factors, removal
of
alcohol
or
offending toxins, and correction of
any
associated metabolic disorders usually
result in recovery from
the
illness.
