CHILDREN'S
TEETH
AGAINST DENTAL
CARIES
characterized
by a
bacteria-
induced
progressive
destruc-
tion
of
the
mineral and organic
components
of the
outer
en-
amel and
underlying
dentin.
Numerous studies have
clearly
shown
that the most
important
local etiological factor
as-
sociated
with dental caries
is
poor oral
hygiene resulting
in
the accumulation
of
grossly
vis-
ible
adherent masses
of
bac-
teria, calculus and
food
impac-
tion. lf the carious
lesion
progresses unchecked, there
is
eventual infection
of the
dental
pulp,
giving rise
to an
acute
pulpitis or other
severe
problems.
Treatment
and
prophylaxis
is
aimed
at
elimination
of afore-
mentioned
local
causal
factor
and the development of a local
environment
which
is
indacive
to
good oral
hygiene.
Artificial
fluoridation
of
drinking
water
may
lead
to a
significant
re-
duction
in the
occurence
of
dental caries in
permanent
teeth
of
children.
