()BESITY
AND
RELATED
HEART
COMPLICATI()NS
ln extremely
obese
patients,
the
heart
may
be
markedly enlarged, with the
left
ventricle showing
the
greatest
hypertrophy.
The
clinical
course of obesity
heart disease
can
lead
to
congestive
heart
failure. Thus, ideal body weight
should
be
maintained
to
pre-
vent
overload
of
the
heart.
lf
the
patient
is
obese he should
re-
duce
in
weight; if he is
of
nor-
mal weight, his diet should
be
adjusted
to
prevent
the gain
in
weight,
i.e.,
the caloric content,
animal
food and
other
satu-
rated fats
should be
restricted.
The blood
pressure
should
be
maintained
at
normal
levels,
and
smoking
should
be
forbidden.
ln
addition
to
the
above
concern,
a
therapeutic
trial of salt
restriction
and
diuretics
may be indicated.
