The Winter Chinese Radish Matches Ginseng
The Chinese white radish relieves flu, cough, phlegm, hoarseness, dryness of the nose & lips, indigestion, poor appetite, mild
constipation (acting gently on the gut) and even dryness of the face (local application of radish juice). Radish contains protein,
sugar, fibre, vitamins B complex & C, iron, calcium and phosphorus. The head part of radish has more vitamin C; the middle
part, more sugar; the tail part, more amylase (digests carbohydrates): helps our digestion. When enjoying a steaming hot pot,
radish soak through with the rich soup base is the best tasting "medicine" for indigestion. Radish seeds are supposed to be
good for chronic indigestion; the leaves have medicinal use: good for acute disturbances of the digestive system. As radish
is an antidote to common TCM herbs, it should not be taken together with ginseng, di huang and shou wu: wait for at least
2 hours. At its best in winter, radish is hailed as even matching ginseng: regular consumption is recommended especially in
winter for best health and minor ailments: akin to "an apple a day drives the doctor away"!
