Accidental Swallowing of Whole Red Dates: Disastrous
Red dates are nutritious and have medicinal values, e.g., enhancing immunity and suppressing antibodies: useful for combating
pathological reactions, e.g., drug allergies, allergic purpura (bruises due to allergy) and even thrombocytopenic (low platelets) purpura.
However, as the red date nuts are pointed at both ends, children and the elderly may be caught, e.g., a very elderly had persistent upper
tummy ache, vomiting and fever; rigid and tender abdomen and X-ray signs of gut perforation. An operation found duodenal perforation
by a red date nut, with much pus at the perforation with whole abdominal cavity infection (peritonitis). After repair, he stayed in hospital
for 2 weeks. Another elderly in Beijing had progressive swallowing difficulty and chest pain after swallowing a whole red date. At the
Friendship Hospital, an operation found the nut had perforated his esophagus (leading to the stomach). Red date nuts are hazardous: a
worst scenario is perforation of esophagus and the aorta (main artery): a rapidly fatal condition. Do take your time when consuming red
dates!
