Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorders
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) with elusive mechanisms, is a depressive mood usually related to shorter hours of sunlight during
winter seasons. A common belief is that light induces production of serotonin, a neuron-transmitter related to our diurnal rhythm,
vitality and mood. With reduced serotinin due to less sunlight, SAD is precipitated. Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
are for depression (act by increasing serotonin through inhibiting its reuptake into the presynaptic cells. SAD is 8 times commoner
in women; affects 6% of northern city dwellers up to the age of 50. Signs are: unusual and unexpected depression: suicidal if severe;
loss of all the usual interests; extreme tiredness; always sleepy; anti-social behaviors, becoming dazed if severe; sleep and appetite
disturbances: over-indulgence on starchy food ending up with excessive weight gain, etc. Treatment may be by light therapy; color
therapy; pet therapy; touring therapy, etc. Take a balanced diet, have regular retiring hours and physical exercises. Take life easy and
socialize; if in doubt, consult your doctor!
