Starting a Newborn Baby on Milk: the Beneficial “Bitter Sweet” Method
According to generations of experience, tradition Chinese midwives would prescribe an aqueous preparation of rhubarb and liquorice
to start the newborn baby on milk feeding. The rationale seems to be the bitter taste offering an good contrast to the more pleasant
tasting milk. However, there is a scientific basis. Inside the mother’s womb, the baby’s relatively limited access to oxygen demanded
a higher haemoglobin (18-20 g/dL) to compensate. After birth, with free breathing in air, the excess haemoglobin has to be excreted
in the form of bilirubin that the liver has to excrete. If the liver is still too immature, it just could not get rid of all the bilirubin in good
time; clinically, the baby would have jaundice. The worst is: any excessive bilirubin manifesting as jaundice may harm the brain. The
Author believes that rhubarb and liquorice would help because liquorice contains glycyrrhizic acid that decomposes in the body into
glycyrrhetinic acid and glucuronide; the former enhances the liver detoxification properties; the latter, combines with certain toxic
substances into non-toxic substances and are excreted outside the body. Beware of excessive dosage!
