Why a Village Kid Was Amputated: be Careful About Acupuncture Injections
A village kid’s intractable diarrhoea was treated by injecting small quantities of chloramphenicol into the “zusanli” acupuncture
point. A few days later, the injected site was infected, most probably by bacteria; it soon progressed to cellulitis and was also
complicated by septicaemia (bacteria in the blood stream). Failing antibiotics, extensive tissue necrosis soon ensued that required
a below-knee amputation. Moreover, 168 cases (nearly all children) of upper limb deformities resulted from “hegu” acupuncture
point injections; aseptic necrosis ensued; then scar contracture and deformities. Be careful on injections: (1) Use sparingly (2)
Use non-irritant or less irritant medications for injections; avoid using known irritants, e.g., penicillin, chloramphenicol, analgin,
aminophylline, chlorpromazine, vitamin B1, etc., or dilute with normal saline solution (3) Avoid injecting at or around nerves (4)
Use strict aseptic technique (5) Be extra careful with the skin of babies (6) Avoid performing injections on the hands: muscles are
small; muscle spasm / atrophy may occur leading to deformity of the hand; never inject anything into the “hegu” points of children!
