A Patient Died After 3 Phrases Uttered
Once, a patient died one day after being told, “You came too late!”; the patient then requested the doctor to try harder
but was told, “Your disease has no treatment”; on further requests, the patient was told to get the “last rites”… It was like
pouring ice cold water. It is a pity that doctors talk too little; ask too little and listen too little. Of the numerous medical
malpractice cases, 80% arises from poor service attitudes of medics; only 20% are really technical faults. Nowadays,
with such hi-tech treatments distracting from the basic medical requirements, the humanity touch is lost. The poor
doctor-patient relationship has eroded the good image of medics. The Father of Medics – Hippocrates had put “words”
as the No. 1 skill of the doctor, above medications and surgery – words may benefit the patient but may also kill the
patient. Kind and positive words have psychological effect on the patient. Good communication skills also enable better
doctor-patient understanding as they are actually in two different worlds – only active communication can bridge the
gap. As patients are not machines, they have feelings, especially if the disease is serious.
