Conquering Malaria
As quinine and even the synthetic mapacrine were less effective, the malaria parasite kills millions. In 1972,
taking hint from classical Chinese writings, Tu Youyou extracted artemisinin from qing hao; 1983 saw the
successful synthesis of artemisinin: as both are much more effective than old drugs, millions of lives were
saved. By 1995, it was listed in the International Pharmacopoeia of WHO: a first of its kind. In 2011, Tu was
granted the Lasker Clinical Medicine Research Award in the US. For 10 years, the global deaths from malaria
decreased by 38%; among 43 countries and regions with active malaria infection, death rates have dropped
at least by half: artemisinin kills rapidly the parasite infecting the body, including most importantly, brain
infestations. Yet, 2009 saw resistant strains of the parasite in Cambodia; since then, combinations of anti-
malarials containing artemisinin were advocated by WHO to overcome such a phenomenon: acclaimed by
Lancet as having 97% efficacy. The WHO World Malaria Report 2015 reported 6.2 million malaria patients
had been saved through artemisinin, insecticide treated mosquito nets and indoor residual spraying:
mission accomplished! As resistance to both insecticide and artemisinin would increase progressively,
much more work is still required!
