Would the Zika Virus Mutilate the World
Zika virus infections occur in Africa, America, South Asia and West Pacific Regions. It was first discovered
in 1947 and has, for years, sporadic cases in Africa and South Asia. In 2007, it started to occur in the Pacific
Region; by 2013, it became more prevalent in the West Pacific Region, America and Africa: apparently
enhanced by the prevalent trend of urbanization and globalization creating a favorable environment for
those mosquitos: Zika virus infection would become even more prevalent; its clinical course is relatively
mild. It spreads by Aedes aegypti mosquitos with characteristic white bands on their legs: the same ones
that spread dengue and chikungunya viruses: Zika infection is confirmed by a blood test. There is no proof
that it spreads among humans, but, in USA, spread through sexual contact is reported. Infected pregnant
woman may have microcephalic newborns: deferring pregnancy in endemic countries is reasonable. Avoid
mosquito bites, use insecticides, mosquito nets and cover up! Rid all water collections; before travelling,
seek help from health authorities. Prof Trudie Lang of Oxford University advocates using the experience on
Ebola for Zika; to pin related research onto the global effort against new infections. Beware, its presence in
Asia has been a few years already!
