Hypoglycemia: Risks & Disadvantages
For diabetics, blood sugar levels ≤ 3.9 mmol/L: “hypoglycemic” (too low): likely due to: prolonged and abrupt physical exercises;
emotion upset/sudden change; excessive drinking; poor kidney function leading to prolonged diabetic drug actions; post-partum
and lactating periods; hormonal disturbances; inappropriate anti-diabetic use; poor feeding; some drugs interfere with antidiabetics,
e.g., sulfonylurea is enhanced by phenylbutazone, aspirin, sulfonamide, propranolol, morphine, etc.: blood sugar may be too low.
Sulfonylureas acts strongly and rapidly, has long duration of action but prone to hypoglycemia: elderly should mind. The glinides
are less prone to hypoglycemia. Insulin injections are also prone: must follow your doctor’s instructions very strictly. Symptoms of
hypoglycemia are sweating, tremor, palpitation, nervousness, weakness, pallor; when brain function is affected, e.g., after 6 hours of
hypoglycemia, related symptoms also ensue. If no prompt treatment, coma and even death ensue. If the patient is still conscious, give
immediately sugars or sugary food items; if no response after 10 minutes despite adequate sugars, or, if unconscious, go to hospital at
once. For prevention, have regular and fixed meals; avoid drinking; take appropriate exercises; get the emergency card ready; above all,
monitor blood sugar level regularly!
