The Autonomic Nervous System & Health
Upon invasion by micro-organisms, our autonomic nervous system (ANS) activates our adrenals, increases the white blood cells; our
parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) enhances lymphocyte functions: both increase our immunity against micro-organisms. When
the PNS is overactive, tissue necrosis factor-alpha and nuclear factor-kappa B provide critical links between inflammation and cancer.
ANS derangement characteristically affects the whole body, is paroxysmal and highly individualized: panic, anxiety, depression, lack of
attention, loss of memory, tiredness, insomnia, urinary frequency, diarrhoea, intermittent sweaty palms, fidgety, irritability, polyphagia
or anorexia, etc. Diseases due to derangements of the ANS is typically an interaction between psychological and physiological aspects.
Clinically, patients with postural hypotension, electro-cardiogram and abnormal transcutaneous electrical nerve impulses, etc., may
help in monitoring ANS derangements. Although stress and pressure cannot be avoided, we can still try to live with these and achieve
a well-balanced cushioning effect. Learn to master your emotions, otherwise, one may become depressed or even have suicidal ideas.
