Our Health: Immunity of the Gut & its Bacterial Colonies
Of our >100 trillion beneficial bacteria (probiotics) with thousands of species living in harmony in our gut for mutual benefits, mostly
are lactobacilli and bifidobacterium; 99% are in the colon. With greater numbers of probiotics over pathological ones, a dynamic
barrier forms. For our immunity, probiotics enhance: (1) Development and maturation of immunological organs; increase the number of
lymphocytes (2) The immunological function of macrophages and T-lymphocytes (3) Quantity of immunoglobulin A for humoral or “fluid”
immunity (4) The mediation of secretion of cytokines (5) Nutritional support to immunological cells (6) Regulation of allergic reactions
(7) The integrity of the gut protection layer. Stress upsets the probiotic balance: overgrowth of pathological bacteria ensues; their toxins
enter our blood leading to chronic inflammation; eventually induce various gut diseases, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, etc. Lack of
probiotics leads to diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and even colon cancer. Avoid excessive antibiotics; take more “prebiotics”,
e.g., oligosaccharides to enhance the growth of probiotics; avoid excessive fats, lest overgrowth of pathological bilophila wadsworthia
ensues: overactive immunity results. Consult your doctor on probiotics!
