immunological status
of
the patient
has
come
to be
regarded
as
an
important
factor
in
the
control
of
can-
cer,
especially
when
there
exists
only
a low tumor
burden.
This
concept
has
given rise to the
use
of
Biological
Response
Modidiers
(BRM)
in
cancer therapy.
According
to
the
National Cancer
lnsti-
tute,
BRM
is
defined as "drugs that
can regulate
the
relationship
between the host and
the tumor,
leading
to
a
biological
response
of the
therapeutic value."
BRM
has
become a new, additional mode of
anti-cancer
treat-
ment.
PSP
is
also
BRM,
and many
experimental
studies
have
shown that it
has
positive
inhibitory
action
on
various kinds
of ani-
mal tumors.
PSP
can enhance
both humoral
and
cell-mediated im-
mune
reactions, especially
under
immuno-deficient
conditions
such
as
tumor-bearing
animals
or
animals
treated with
immuno-
suppressors. Pilot studies
in
the
use
of
PSP
plus radiotherapy had
shown
some
promising
results.
