CANCER TREATMENT REQUIRES TACTFUL STRATEGIES
The prevalence of cancer has impact even on the economy and society. Success even with standard modalities of treatment is
only 45%, with surgery contributing 22%, radiotherapy, 18% and chemotherapy and others, 5%. Although cancers are a
systemic disease manifesting as loco-regional lesions, the limited resolution of current technology fails to document microscopic
metastases from the loco-regional cancer. As chemotherapy is too expensive and has a low efficacy for the common solid
cancers, there is room for TCM to improve on the general immunity to eradicate "the last cancer cell" but the concept of "poison
attack poison" should be given up. Although Western medicine is the mainstay for cancer eradication, one should "take it easy"
to maximize benefit for the cancer patient. The best cancer management is to achieve good quality of life through the application
of evidence-based medicine. As TCM physicians emphasize "patient-orientated, whole patient" approach, they can strike a
balance between "killing" the cancer and "preservation" of the body. Above all, the mutual enhancement principle is the way to
go for multi-modality treatment.
