HYPERSENSITIVITY & HEALTH
Hypersensitivity, eg., to pollen, involves: (1) Antigen induction, usually through antigen re-challenging (2) Immuno-globulin E (IgE)
production: antigens are engulfed by macrophages, submitted to T helper 2 (Th2) cells that produce interleukin-4 (IL-4) stimulat-
ing excessive IgE production (3) Hypersensitivity media release: IgE combines with receptors on the mast cell surface; the IgE is
bound to the antigen upon a subsequent encounter so that the mast cell releases hypersensitivity media, eg., histamines.
Normally, regulatory T cells (T reg) regulate the function of Th2 cells; Hypersensitivity may occur when Th1 cell production is
suboptimal, eg., with too clean an environment (Hygiene Hypothesis) so that in balance, Th2 cells predominate, or, failure of T
reg cells, eg., through the dominance of the CATA-3 gene over the FOXP3 gene, in regulating Th2 cells. The Mina gene is also
thought to control IL-4 and IgE. Avoid antigens by, eg., walking after rain (less pollen), reducing air pollution and dust; note food
ingredients, (even minute quantities); take exercises, fruits and vegetables; consult the doctor promptly: hypersensitivity is
manageable, even curable!
