UNHEALTHY FOOD ITEMS TO AVOID
Starchy food heated to high temperatures produces acrylamides: cause cancer in animals; indeterminate in humans. A stronger
carcinogen, benzopyrene, is produced when fat is heated to 160oC, eg., upon barbecuing: avoid meat getting too close to the
fire. Deep-fried fish fingers of cod have beneficial polyunsaturated fatty acids and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), etc., but they
also have other ingredients, eg., lots of salt, monosodium glutamate, etc. Canned thick soups also have too much salt and
flavourings. Canned green tea mixed with other drinks for better taste would spoil the goodness of green tea; likewise, yogurt is
spoiled by adding sugar. Potato meshed and mixed with butter or deep fried and salted are all unhealthy. Instant popcorn
processed in a microwave oven usually has too many additives to improve the palatability; but these are harmful to our health.
Some whole bran bread would have too much additives. Food labelled as "organic" may be misleading or only partially true. Both
instant pizzas and instant noodles have preservatives. Cured meats have nitrosamines (carcinogenic!). Some breakfast cereals
have more additives than cereals - beware!
